Coast of Maine Sprout Island Seed Starter 16 qt. | Gilford Hardware
Coast of Maine Coast of Maine Sprout Island Seed Starter 16 qt. $9.49
Coast of Maine Sprout Island Seed Starter 16 qt.   • Benefits • • Description • • Specification • • Great Organic & Natural Soil for Seed germination, rooting, and plant cuttings • Enriched with compost, lobster meal, kelp meal, and worm casings • Natural slow-release nitrogen helps plants grow • Locally sourced from Maine! Organic Products from the Maine Coast Blended sphagnum peat moss, perlite, kelp meal, worm castings, and well-aged compost make up Sprout Island Organic Seed Starter. It contains mycorrhizae and is ready to use in cell packs* or flats, retaining moisture and aerating the soil naturally. It has a light organic fertilizer charge that promotes a biologically varied environment perfect for seed and root cutting germination. 100% Organic and All Natural Sprout Island Blend Organic & Natural Seed Starter is handcrafted to provide the ideal compost-based environment for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings, according to us. Follow these few simple steps Thoroughly moisten the mix with warm water before use. Make sure it is well mixed so that there are no dry areas but be sure not to make it too soggy. Fill the planting container to within 1/4 inch from the top and tap the container to slightly settle the soil. Plant your seeds according to the directions on the seed packet. Water in the seeds lightly without saturating the entire soil volume. Place in lighting and temperature conditions as per the seed packet. After the seeds have germinated, provide them with 12 – 14 hours of light per day, keeping them close to the light source to prevent leggy growth. After 3 weeks, top dress with organic plant food and water it in. Rooting Cuttings Choose green, non-woody stems for taking tip cuttings. Use a scissor or razor blade that has been sterilized in alcohol to make a clean cut. Place the cutting on a flat, hard surface and make a clean slice through the stem on a slant. Remove all but 1 or 2 leaves. With a pencil or pointed object poke holes into the moistened seed starting soil. Dip the node end of the cuttings into the water and then root powder if desired. Carefully place the cuttings into the holes you made in your seed starter soil and gently firm the soil around them. Place the container of cuttings into a plastic bag but don’t seal the bag completely, to allow some airflow. Place the bagged cell pack, tray, flat or another container in a warm spot but don’t put them into full sun until new growth appears and they can be removed from the bag. Check regularly to be sure there is not so much condensation on the top of the bag that it is dripping onto the seedlings. If this happens, the seed starter soil is too wet. Replace the bag and allow the soil to dry out a bit. Check your cuttings regularly in case they start to rot before they root. Remove any suspect cuttings as soon as you see rot. Once the cuttings have developed roots, they can be removed from the bag and planted into pots of their own filled with Stonington Blend™ Grower’s Mix or Bar Harbor Blend™ Potting Soil.
