BEHOLD THE SCAG JACKAL: YOUR FIRST GLIMPSE
Upon arrival our distributor told us that he needed to have new tires, and brakes put on his trailer due to the goliath size of the Scag Jackal, at first I didn't believe him but quickly saw during the unload a standard four wheel box trailer was having a tough time moving it. Not saying that it can't but I'd use special precaution or purchase a more heavy duty trailer for this type of application. The Sheer size of the Scag Jackal Mini Tracked Skid Steer weight wise compared to it's competitors is intimidating. Weighing in at 3,500 lbs you will find same class competitors with weights in the 2600 range. Which makes me wonder, what is it exactly missing?
THE THING ABOUT MINI-TRACKED SKID STEERS..
When doing independent research on competitors' mini-skid steers, which fall within the same size and price range, you'll find that they share comparable engines and horsepower. This is largely because the Kubota engine, known for its durability and reliability, has been the industry standard for mini track skid steers for years, boasting a service life of 5,000 to 10,000+ hours with regular maintenance.
If most mini-tracked skid steers on the market today have similar engines and prices, what sets them apart? The answer lies in the quality, design, frame, hydraulics, and components. The real decision comes down to which skid steer excels in all these areas. Let me tell you, the Scag Jackal Mini Tracked Skid Steer stands out. In this article, we'll share our first impressions of the Scag Jackal and explain why it's truly "Simply the Best."
THE ULTIMATE ENGINE FOR STAND-ON MINI SKID STEERS: KUBOTA D1305-E4B IN THE SCAG JACKAL
The Kubota® D1305-E4B engine is the gold standard for Mini-Tracked Skid Steer Engines, renowned for its application in a wide range of construction and excavation Outdoor Power Equipment. Its unmatched durability, easy starting, and robust design make it the preferred choice for top-tier performance.
Compliant with EPA Tier 4 emissions regulations, the D1305 engine offers durable power with its high power density and naturally aspirated 3-cylinder configuration, delivering the highest output in the Kubota 05 Series. The Kubota 05 Series is a recognized leader, chosen by numerous industrial equipment manufacturers for its reliable performance.
The engine’s original E-TVCS (Three Vortex Combustion System) has been enhanced, optimizing airflow, combustion chamber, and piston recess to ensure low particulate matter (PM) levels, meeting the stringent standards of the 37 kW class and higher. Additionally, the half-float valve cover and MoS2-coated pistons minimize noise and reduce vibrations from the valve area, providing clean and quiet power.
With a variety of engine accessory options available, the D1305-E4B stands out as the reliable diesel-powered heart of the Scag Jackal. When you combine this powerhouse engine with the superior design, engineering, and durability of the Scag Jackal, you achieve the pinnacle of stand-on mini skid steers on the market.
HEAVY-DUTY DESIGN
The Scag Jackal's frame exemplifies the heavy-duty engineering Scag Outdoor Power Equipment is known for. Every component, from the frame to the loader lift arm, bucket cylinder, operator's platform, and gas tanks, is constructed with thick-gauge steel. While I can't specify the exact width, it's notably thicker than the steel used in commercial-grade Scag Velocity Plus cutter decks. This robust construction contributes significantly to the Scag Jackal's weight compared to its competitors. In contrast, competitor models use much thinner gauge steel, making them far less durable over time.
EASE OF SERVICE
Unlike many of its competitors, the Scag Jackal was designed for simple and easy access and maintenance. Every critical component is easily accessible and neatly placed throughout the chassis. Beneath the operator's panel, a removable metal panel allows access to the hydraulics. Opening the single front hood reveals a well-thought-out design, providing easy access to hydraulic fluids, the air filter, and various other components. The hydraulic lines and wiring harnesses are neatly tucked and zip-tied. This thoughtful design means that many issues requiring extended downtime or trips to the dealership can be self-serviced with a bit of effort.
Wait, if it's easy to service and maintain, does that mean it will need more frequent servicing? Absolutely not. Scag Outdoor Power Equipment has a long-standing reputation for building machines that are both easy to service and maintain. Unlike many competitors, who design their machines to be difficult to service to profit from maintenance over the long run, Scag focuses on durability and user-friendliness.
QUALITY COMPONENTS
The Scag Jackal Stand-On Mini Skid Steer is a testament to superior engineering and robust construction, featuring top-tier components that set it apart in the industry. SCAG JACKAL DOMINATES WITH MASSIVE DUAL DIESEL TANKS
One of the standout features of the Scag Jackal is its large capacity dual diesel tanks, which hold an impressive 12 gallons of diesel, compared to its competitors. In similar class skid-steers, tanks can be as small as 7 gallons. This large capacity provides a significant advantage, not only adding extra weight but also allowing for longer work periods between fill-ups.
*Notice: the thick sheet metal surrounding each tank. You won't find steel of this quality and thickness on many of Scag Jackal's competitors, especially when it comes to protecting the tanks, and perhaps not even on their frames.
